Deep Thought: A Cybersecurity Story
CASE STUDY: DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN
About the client:
ideas42 is a social enterprise that uses behavioral science to design scalable solutions that seek to do good. In their Cybersecurity work, they found that experts estimate that 70-80% of the costs attributed to cyber attacks are actually the result of human error, leading them to apply a behavioral science lens to what has traditionally been considered a technological problem. Through their research, they identified new opportunities and interventions to improve human behavior and security.
GOALS:
Create a publication that allows for examination of the challenges in cybersecurity through the lens of behavioral science.
Illustrate behavioral biases identified in cybersecurity and the contexts in which they arise.
Create a design scheme that helps facilitate the storytelling while also supporting science-driven analysis interspersed throughout.
PROCESS:
Create a design scheme that correlates with ideas42 visual brand but packages book as a distinct product.
Collaborate with an illustrator to produce custom drawings to correlate with storytelling.
Create visual structure for different types of content displayed, such as narrative, callout boxes, appendixes, and more.
Optimize primarily for digital distribution alongside a printed publication.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Policymakers and practitioners in the realm of cybersecurity that can benefit from a behavioral lens to better optimize their practices and processes for human errors and limitations.
RESULTS:
The novella was presented at the New America’s Cybersecurity for a New America conference in 2017 and was distributed among attendees and online viewers to further the conversation to improve cybersecurity.
